Fashion Magazines - Why Read Them?

  • May. 25th, 2009 at 2:28 PM
Many women and now men love reading fashion magazines, partly because they see the models and the lifestyle and this is something they want to be a part of. However are they really worth reading or are they just a waste of paper.

Many people dislike fashion magazines as they see them as just one long advert. Going from page to page, many of the stories look like adverts with just pictures of clothes and no real explanation about who they would suit best.

However there are many positive things that can be said about fashion magazines and what they can offer you.

The best thing about these magazines is that they now not only show skinny hire female models but have also branched out into showing voluptuous and plus size men and women that consumers appreciate. Gone is the belief that only reed-thin people have the right to look good and be fashionable.

Designers have realized that the market of plus-sized consumers is now much larger and so they have made designs specifically for this niche market.

Some people do believe that fashion female models can distort the readers' self-image by presenting glamorous and beautiful models on their covers and pages. However people have a big use for fashion magazines as you can often find clothes that will actually look great on your body type.

You can also find useful tips on how to mix and match clothes you already have in your wardrobe to create a great new look. Sometimes, you will also find high street clothes that are in the style of top designer clothes which will enable you to create that designer look for a decent cost. In fact, some of the better fashion magazines will feature high street shops where you can find great buys without costing more than you can afford. Others also feature the regular working class donning designer apparel to emphasize that everybody can and should wear whatever they feel comfortable in.

As more and more people recognize the dangers of wanting to be thin in the belief that thinner people look better, fashion magazines also build awareness on eating disorders and other such diseases that may result from crash diets and starving yourself to achieve what you consider your ideal weight.

Publishers have become more responsible in making their readers aware of being healthy no matter what your size is. This is one major factor why consumers no longer scoff at the thought of anyone consulting a fashion magazine for whatever reason.

In some magazines, you will also find advice corners where readers can post their questions from achieving a great look for whatever occasion, to finding the best clothes within their budget to health concerns, even.

The bottom line is that the evolution of fashion magazines have made them not only more enjoyable to read but, more importantly, more informative for the readers. While it is true that models may still look more perfect than you, bear in mind that the pictures have undergone enhancement via computer technology so, sometimes, what you see is already the improved version. However be selective, don't just go for the big names, sample different fashion magazines and read the ones that make you feel good.

What Agencies Look For In Male Models

  • Apr. 20th, 2009 at 5:42 PM
There is a very large demand for men in the modeling industry. For various reasons, modeling has been predominantly a female activity. In the last 20 years this has taken a dramatic change. You must remember that there are thousands of high-end companies that strictly produce products for men. These firms are always looking for people to show off their goods.

There is no question that it is easier for a male to be successful in the bikini female models industry than a female. This mostly comes because guys have a much larger range. Females in the industry are held to such requirement that only a handful can even qualify. While the male look is easier to obtain, there still is a range. If you are thinking of becoming a male model, here is some information that will help you determine if you have the look.

The first thing to discuss is the age. Male models can vary anywhere from 16 to 60. The most defined market is the 23-37 age group. The great thing about being a male model over a female model is the industry is lacking men at every age. Obviously if you fit into the strongest category you are going to have the best chance, but models are in high demand and all ages.

The physical requirements are quite broad. The majority of the time, the industry is looking for a model with the height between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet 2 inches. For the most part, it is better to be on the tall side of the spectrum. Like their female counterparts, male models are expected to be in great shape with little body fat. This can vary depending on the situation. There are many different types of models. Many companies are looking for bigger models that more fit their clientele. This means that even if you aren't six two with an amazing body, there is still plenty of work for you.

One of the most important things agencies look for in their models is great skin. hire models need to lose all the body hair, and the skin needs to be smooth. This has become an absolute norm in the industry. The most important thing is to have fun and do good work. If you can get a name as being someone that is easy to work with and does excellent work, you can go far in the modeling business.

The bottom line is there is a huge shortage of good male models. If you have the desire, locate your local talent agency
and see what kind of an offer they are willing to make.

When is Young Too Young

  • Apr. 14th, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Walking down the runway, there's the regular top models: Gemma Ward - 20, Hilary Rhoda - 21, Agyness Deyn - 25, and then there's the occasional Maddison Gabriel - 13. Wait a second. 13 years old?! Many people might raise their eyebrow when they hear this. I certainly did. But is 12-13 really too young?

Top model and one of the world's first super teen models Janice Dickinson, argues against young girls Modeling audition "There's lots of drugs, there's lot of alcohol, there's lot's of photographers preying on these girls." Listening to that I would say that pre-teens and even girls up to 18 are too young to model. But what about Kimora Lee Simmons? Didn't she have a contract with Chanel at the age of 13? How come people never make a big deal about her?

Another issue about young models is the growing fear of eating disorders. There actually have been deaths amongst the models and that's when we all know that something is wrong. Even though there's such a huge controversy over skinny models, Karl Lagerfeld claims, "We don't see anorexic (girls). The girls are skinny, they have skinny bones." On the other hand, Vogue's editor, Anna Wintour is said to be sick of skinny models. Now going back to the main subject. If a young teen gets thrown into the fashion industry, are there chances of her developing an eating disorder? Highly possible, but some argue that since they aren't fully developed women, there is no reason to worry about their size and weight.

In my opinion, I think their should be a certain age requirement and if the model's too young, she just won't be able to model till they grow up. There's a lot of issues on the line such as sexuality, health problems, and too much stress that models might suffer in the fashion industry. However, I still wonder in awe when I see girls that are just 15 that are beautiful and know how to model. They have talent, no doubt about it, but are they presenting it at too young of an age? Well this debate may take a long time...

Starting a Career as a Fashion Model

  • Apr. 8th, 2009 at 12:03 PM
In order to enter into a career as a fashion model, the first thing that you'll need is an attractive figure and appealing looks. If you don't already have these, it's going to be that much harder to break in. It isn't all that difficult and most people can manage it, if they try right and try hard enough. If you are going for strictly a photographic modeling career, your standards can be dropped a mite, since today's imaging technology can work miracles in erasing blemishes and altering the final appearance of a photograph.

As in any industry, there is a fine line between success and failure in modeling tips To have a chance of becoming a successful model, you first need to think and act like a successful person; or as they say, act like a winner and the world will treat you like one. Once you begin to see yourself as a successful model you'll naturally start doing the things to make it happen. Not to sound like it's that easy, of course; it does require work but so does working a nine to five job. So, now that you're thinking of yourself as a successful model, let's get to some basics you must know.

If you plan to model, especially as a high fashion or runway model, you need several demanding physical attributes. The standard is that you need to be at least 5'8" tall or taller. Your body weight and proportions need to flatter your height; fashion models notoriously diet and exercise all their lives. You need to have a good skin complexion without lots of pimples or blemishes, and you need to have relatively little body hair and to tan well. Your hair should be in good shape with no excessive split-ends or damage from over-dying. Your teeth should be well taken care of, straight and white; the only acceptable option here is having a dynamite smile.

Look closely in the mirror and be brutally honest with yourself. We all have limitations; and the fashion industry has developed unbelievably high standards. Some of these things listed above you can work to improve and some, like your height or your skin tone, you were just born with. Even if you don't have all these model attributes, don't give up hope; there are other opportunities in modeling not specifically related to walking a runway or getting your photo in a glossy magazine. In addition, you've probably already considered extensive cosmetic surgery - this is a given in the fashion industry.

The next thing is of course to get noticed and get recruited by a name brand modeling agency. Actually, it's good to keep in mind that these agencies need you as much as you need them. They are constantly on the look out for fresh young faces and if you're hanging out in the right places they might spot you out all by themselves. But it isn't a very good idea to hang around and wait for that to happen. These days to get noticed you have to be proactive and push things yourself. Your first step in this direction would be to get a list of agencies that recruit models and send your professional portfolio of photographs to them. Simple photographs should serve the purpose well enough, so you don't have to spend money on creating an expensive portfolio. Agencies also often have open castings that you can attend to get selected. Find out from the agencies in your area when they have these and when they are planning their next event.

Another leg up is the movie and film extras agencies. It's very easy to get cast in one of these agencies, and anything like a byline can only help. Another possibility is to gain experience working as a live model for small businesses. Perhaps a public appearance at a convention or a local event at a department store can help beef up that portfolio.

The real action starts after you've been picked up by one of these agencies through your smart networking. You may have to relocate and live away from your family, or at the least you will have to travel the world. It may take time to get your first major job, and you have to be both patient and disciplined until then. Make sure that you attend all the casting calls, and show up for shoots on time. The top stars in this career can get away with having people wait on them, but you can afford no such luxury when you're starting out.

Present yourself in a natural and relaxed way; confidence is half of the game. The agency that takes you in will be presenting you to their clients for consideration in teen models needs. If you are relaxed and simple, your chances may be much better at getting selected than if you are heavily made up, put up artificial postures, or are trying hard to impress. Just as this is true of almost anything, being relaxed and not worrying too much about what's going to happen will be the most common sense approach.

If you're going to be a model, you better learn to love the camera and the studio environment. It goes without saying that you don't hesitate to show yourself off. Fashion models get body coaches and practice poses to find out what type of posture suits them best and try to do those. Every fashion model is a little bit of an exhibitionist, so you might as well decide now that you like to be looked at. For instance, take it as a given that a fashion career will include some nude modeling along the way.

The kind of work of a fashion career demands a submissive disposition. You will have to be where they tell you, wear what they tell you, and move and pose how they tell you. The photographer, filmer, or director will be in charge, and you'll have to be good at following directions. Modeling and acting are intimately intertwined, so get used to the idea that you are a performer and not just an ornament.

Interview With Fors Models Talent Agency

  • Apr. 6th, 2009 at 11:50 AM
What if I'm not tall and slim?

Even if shorter models have found success in the modeling industry, these few represent the exception to the rule. Clothing for runway shows and magazine shoots tends to come in one size. If you can't fit into a designer's garments, you will face difficulty in finding work.

What else does Ford search for in potential models?

No absolute criteria exist -- perusing fashion magazines will suggest as much. Reviewing a variety of magazines -- not only trendy or prestigious, but commercial, too -- can help develop your understanding of just what look girls should have. A complex set of relations between photographers, magazines, clients, and modeling agencies determine the look for bikini female models in any given season. To remain competitive modeling agencies must contribute the right girls to this network of photographers, magazines, and clients.

Does Ford work with plus-sized models?

Yes, the plus-sized division works with women between the heights 5'9" and 5'11" (175 cm and 180 cm), sizes 10 to18, and between the ages of 15 and 30.

What does it take to be a model in the men's division?

Ford's men's division looks for men between the heights 6' and 6'2" (183 cm and 188 cm). Men at Ford mostly start modeling at age 18 or older. Again, no absolute criteria exist in selecting men for Modeling audition but competitive standards nevertheless inform decisions about which men do and do not model.

What do I need to know about children's modeling?

The children's division works with children aged 6 months and older. Children must live within one hour of New York City in order to meet the demands of casting. However, during the summer season Ford has worked with out-of-town models staying temporarily in the New York metropolitan area.

Does Ford host open calls for children?

No. Please send snapshot photos of prospective children to the address listed below.

What should I do if I want to become a Ford model?

The only way to proceed is by sending your pictures to:

What type of modelling is right for you

  • Apr. 3rd, 2009 at 2:47 PM
Knowing where you fit into the industry is vital to making it. Remember to be realistic and not try and fit yourself into an area that is not right as you will be doomed to fail and this will only lead you to feel disheartened. If you select the right area and focus on that you have a great chance of succeeding and having a successful career. The below will give you a list of the types of modelling and what the requirements for each are:

Fashion

Fashion modelling is probably the hardest type to break into. It is extremely competitive and something that most people want to do but very few will make it. There are very strict requirements to being a fashion model in particular height. Female models will usually need to be at least 5’9’’ in height and men 6’0’’. In the past there has also been a requirement on models to be very, very thin being referred to as size zero. However in 2006 Madrid banned size zero models from their fashion week and Milan followed suit. This does not mean you will not need to be thin, but there is more of a move to the fact that fashion models are more normal with a healthy BMI of 18 or more. To make it in this industry you will normally need to have a striking face however the requirements will change from season to season.

If you do manage to make it into the world of fashion modelling you will find that it is probably the most demanding form where you will need to work full time often travelling long distances on a regular basis. The plus side is that fashion models are usually the most famous and will get the opportunity to hire models on the Runway as well as gaining editorial work on the cover of magazines like Vogue. It is also not uncommon to see fashion models getting advertising work with the most famous brands often getting big contracts with perfume of cosmetic companies to be the "face" of the brand.

Runway

Runway modelling goes hand in hand with fashion modelling and it is very rare that you will do one without the other. Models working in this area will have a very high exposure due to the coverage of the fashion shows they will work at. There are four main fashion weeks in the year with Paris and Milan being the 2 where the most famous designers will exhibit their work and are subject to the largest amount of media coverage. The other 2 main shows are London and New York where up and coming designers get a chance to show their work to a large audience. This is often where new stars in the design world are found.

If you get the opportunity to take part in runway modelling you will find that it is very demanding and will take a lot of dedication on your part to catapult yourself into the "super model" status that so many models crave.

Editorial

Editorial modelling is that done for magazines and usually relates to the fashion world. The main magazines that are in this world are Vogue, Elle, Glamour and Cosmo who all have a huge amount of space to fill every week showing current and upcoming trends in the fashion world. Surprisingly enough this is actually not that well paid however due to the exposure the model will get can lead to other things that will bring in the higher paid work.
Again this area of modelling is highly competitive to get into and then once you are there the competition to be the next face on the cover of a magazine is rife. It is slightly less demanding than the life of a catwalk model but you must still be prepared to work hard. The height requirements are less strict but you will still need to be very thin and look great in front of a camera. You will also need to ensure that you take good care of your hair, skin and body and are always impeccably turned out.

Commercial

The term commercial modelling covers the biggest area of modelling and will include newspaper, magazine, TV and billboard advertising. Advertisers will spend a lot of time looking for a model that will be memorable and will be associated with their product or service.
The requirement for height and build is a lot less rigid in this area as advertisers will be trying to appeal to a particular audience and will want something that they can associate with. A good example of this is the Dove adverts where they have made a big point of using "normal" women. However it is very important that you take good care of your hair, skin, teeth and nails to get this type of work as advertisers will not be impressed if you look scruffy.

Although this is a competitive area of modelling it is open to a much larger group of people and so if you have the right attitude you can definitely make it. If you can act it will be a great advantage.

Glamour

This is a form of modelling that does not involve the selling of a product or service and is usually about the model herself showing her sexuality. Glamour modelling can range from the model wearing underwear to full nude. The most common form that you see is the page 3 girls in the newspaper or the "Lads mags" type images.

The requirements for this type of young female models usually include a curvy figure, larger breasts and an attractive face. Many girls feel the need to have their breasts enlarged in a belief that this will increase their chances of making it. However be aware that this is not necessarily the case and if you look good and can be sexy then you have a great chance. It is vitally important that you have a lot of confidence to do this type of modelling and do not feel self conscious when you take your clothes off.

Remember with this type of modelling it is important that you do not do something you are not comfortable with and a reputable photographer will respect this.

Nude

When we talk of nude modelling we are referring to artistic nude photography. We would usually consider this type of work to be tasteful and not done to titillate at all. Very often it will not include the showing of breasts, bottoms or genitalia but will purely be to show the human form.
This can take several forms and may often be work done for a photographer’s portfolio to show their artistic ability. Nude modelling can often be used in advertising, such as for shower gels and similar type products.

It is important that you are comfortable being naked, especially in a room that may include a photographer, lighting assistant, make-up artist and the like. Having good skin, hair, teeth and nails is essential as you will have nothing to cover these up. Although in many cases you will be required to have a thin, curvy figure to do this kind of work it is not essential as it is an art form and many body shapes and types can be used

Lingerie/swimwear

If you model lingerie and swimwear most of your work will probably be for catalogues and some advertising. The shape of your figure is very important for this type of modelling as most of your body will show. You will usually need to be slim, have a curvy figure, but not too curvy. The most common bra size for this type of modelling is 34B and your hips should be roughly the same size as your bust with your waist 8in to 10in smaller.

You will also find that for this type of work the model is required to have an attractive and striking face and to be reasonably sexy. You will need to keep your skin and hair in tip top condition and when sunbathing do your best to ensure you have no tan lines as these will show up on the camera and not impress a photographer.

Body Parts

Body Parts modelling can cover a wide variety of things with the most common body parts used being the hands and feet. Every body part will have a different requirement but the most important thing to remember is that you take good care of that part of you and ensure it is blemish free.
If you would like to model your hands then you will need to take good care of your nails and having long, slender fingers is an advantage. For feet, again take good care of your toenails and the skin on your feet, it is usually better to have smaller feet, sizes 2-4 as they generally look more delicate in photos.

If you believe you have an exceptional part of your body then remember to take good care of it and ensure that you include this in information about yourself.

Character

Character models will usually find themselves doing advertising work and will require an everyday look that people can relate to. Please refer to commercial modelling for more information.

Plus size

Plus size modelling is something that is growing in demand all the time as advertisers and clothing companies realise there is a huge market in plus size products. Usually this will involve catalogue and advertising work for clothing.
It is usually expected that plus size models are between the sizes of 12 and 18 with an attractive face. Again as with all other types of modelling it is important to take care of your skin, hair, teeth and nails.

Child

Children are always in high demand from advertisers and good models can get a lot of work at all ages. If you believe your child would make a good model the best way to break into the industry is to get in touch with an agent that specialises in children.

With children their personality is probably the biggest deciding factor on whether they get work. They can be the most beautiful child in the world but if they get bored easily or have frequent tantrums they will not get work. Your child should be confident, be at ease when meeting new people, be able to take directions and repeat something over and over again.

As a parent you will need to be present at all photo shoots but it is important to remember that you will need to take a back seat and let the professionals do their thing. A pushy, interfering parent will not be appreciated and will limit the work your child can get.

There are strict laws on child labour including when and how much they can work and as with everything their education must come first.

Now you know a little about the types of modelling available think very carefully about which will best suit you. Remember be realistic, if you do not have the requirements do not go for it, there is something out there for everyone.

Some models would rather promote themselves instead of listing through an modeling agency. Nothing wrong with this but it does require more work on your part.

If your are signed with an agency, they promote the business, they talk to the clients in your behalf, they set up the shooting dates, they take the heat if you don't make it to the session, etc.

But, there are many young models who are "loners" in the pool of modeling and want complete control over who they work with and why.
There are several ways to promote yourself. I will try to mention some ways for you to promote your modeling talent and a step by step format to follow.

Professional portfolio: In self promotion, the first step to take is putting together a professional portfolio. Once you've followed the portfolio guidelines from above, it's a good idea to have comp cards and business cards made.

A) Business Cards:
Your business card should have as much information on it as possible. It's not expensive to have extra words listed and this way you can include things other than the name and phone number.

B) Composite Cards:
You'll definitely want to get composite cards (comp cards) made to hand out to possible clients / agents and to leave with clients or photographers you work with. A comp card is one of the least expensive pieces of printed promotional material but packs a big punch in saying, "I'm a professional model".

C) Modeling Websites:
Should you pay to have your own website created or go with one of the free web listing services online? Your choice in the type of web promotion you do depends upon your level of experience and the amount of budget you have to work with.

If you are, in actuallity, an eccentric millionaire and are just pursuing modeling out of boredom, by all means hire a web designer and start from scratch to build a website that other models will be in awe of! But, even if you go this route, there's the promotional costs and time to think about; time that could be better used to improve your modeling abilities and make contacts with clients who need you for their photo projects.
